Mason, MI – October 6, 2025 – In a high-stakes duel that captivated spectators at Road America, 17-year-old racing prodigy Eric Wisniewski secured a hard-fought second-place finish in the Formula Enterprises® 2 (FE2) class at the 62nd SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Sunoco. The event, held September 29 to October 5 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, crowned national champions across 28 classes, drawing over 700 of the nation’s top amateur road racers to the legendary 4.048-mile circuit. Wisniewski, competing in the No. 25 Hillenburg Motorsports SCCA Enterprises FE2 powered by Mazda, qualified an impressive fourth on the grid after a week of intensive preparation. The Runoffs schedule kicked off with a full week of open testing, allowing drivers to fine-tune their machines on the demanding track known for its sweeping turns and elevation changes. This was followed by three intense days of qualifying, where competitors vied for starting positions in a field of 12 elite FE2 entries. Starting from the second row alongside polesitter Franklin Futrelle of the Atlanta Region and third-place qualifier Gian Buffomante, Wisniewski wasted no time asserting himself. As the 25-minute race unfolded, he and Futrelle broke away from the pack early, establishing a gap of over six seconds to third-place finisher Adam Jennerjahn by the halfway mark. What followed was a masterful cat-and-mouse battle for the lead, with Wisniewski pressuring Futrelle lap after lap in a display of precision driving and strategic racing. Despite his relentless challenge, Futrelle held on to claim the gold medal and his fourth career Runoffs victory, while Wisniewski crossed the line just 1.2 seconds behind for the silver—his second consecutive podium in the class after a runner-up finish in 2024. The week at Road America was a testament to the preparation and teamwork that defines Wisniewski’s rapid ascent in SCCA competition. At just 17, the Western Michigan Region member has already amassed multiple Hoosier Super Tour wins, including a standout victory at Mid-Ohio in May 2025, and qualified for the Runoffs for the second straight year with strong finishes like his 4th and 2nd at the August Majors event in Cresson, Texas. “We were fast on the first day of testing right off the truck but as the track conditions changed for qualifying, we just lacked 1 lap pace,” said Wisniewski. “The team had the car dialed in for the race though and we were one of the fastest cars on track.” Central to Wisniewski’s success was the expertise of Hillenburg Motorsports, the Texas-based team renowned for its Formula Mazda and FE2 programs. Led by veteran crew chief and driver coach Darryl Wills—a three-time Runoffs champion in Formula Mazda (2009-2011) with a storied career spanning sprint cars, Indy Lights, and SCCA nationals—Hillenburg delivered a bulletproof machine optimized for race pace. Wills, who also notched a podium in FE2 at the 2024 Runoffs, not only maintained the car but provided invaluable on-track coaching, drawing from his experience as a former World of Outlaws competitor. “Thank you to all my sponsors who got us here this year including REMAX Commercial Group and Southside Auto Sales of Lansing, as well as support all year from Mazda Motorsports and Hoosier Tire,” Wisniewski added. Additional backing from Elevate Motorsports Marketing and Hillenburg Motorsports ensured Wisniewski arrived fully prepared for his championship bid. As Wisniewski eyes further progression in 2026, potentially toward Formula Continental or beyond, his silver medal performance cements his status as one of SCCA’s rising stars.
